The Southern Literary Messenger publishes articles on subjects as diverse as the branches of science and the humanities.
Informative and opinionated essays on the arts, science, history, technology, business and politics are all welcome, although with regard to politics, we will prefer the explanatory and informative to the polemical.
We welcome articles about the subprime mortgage debacle, synthetic biology, the life and work of Albrecht Durer, offshore oil drilling, the leading facts and attractions of Albania, the aesthetic philosophy of Edmund Burke, the geography, fauna and flora of West Virginia, a travelogue from northern Canada, a history of stock car racing—in short, anything that might be of interest to an intelligent and broad-minded reader.
Books reviews are especially desirable, preferably of non-fiction works.
The SLM also accepts submissions of poetry and fiction. There is no limit on length.
Articles and book reviews may be as long as 10,000 words, although the lengthier pieces may be serialized. There is no minimum.
We ask for first electronic and reprint rights (the latter in the event of paperbound compilation of volumes), and exclusive online use of the material for six months.
The SLM is a non-paying market.
Submissions should be sent here.
